Step Three..

Uploading Your Book

Self publishing basics. Forget the Hoo-Hah, here are the steps to an easy way to publish your book online with Amazon or other self-publishing websites.

Put your book on Amazon first.

Go to www.amazon.com and create an account.
Make sure all your details are correct.
Enter your bank account details. Amazon will pay your royalties monthly direct to this account.

If you are not a citizen of the USA, you need your Tax File Number to enter into the next step of completing a Tax interview. If you don’t do this Amazon will take 30% tax from your royalties. Australia has a treaty with the USA allowing Amazon to take only 5% tax.

The W-8BEN is one of the most commonly used. It certifies foreign status, regarding tax withholding on income. Tax-free income, as specified by this form, includes interest, dividends, rents, royalties and annuities. The form allows foreigners to claim tax treaty benefits.

Start the uploading process

Go to www.amazon.com, log in and go to your account. Go to the bottom of the page to the section headed; "MAKE MONEY WITH US". Select Self-Publish With Us. This will take you to KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) page and you will need to sign in again.

A new screen will open. Select the "Bookshelf " tab.

Begin by creating a NEW TITLE. Select "Kindle ebook"

Follow the steps and enter the information required. Paste in your description (if you have followed Step One.)

Enter your seven keywords. This is very important. These are the words the reader will search for to find a book they want. Put yourself in the readers position. What would they look for to find your book? What would draw their eye in a search? Don't use words in your title (they will automatically be searchable).

Categories are also important. Think of the browse category as sections in a physical bookstore or library (fiction, history, etc.) You can select up to two categories, so be sure to select the most appropriate.

Save and continue.

The next section is where you will select your royalty payment. Amazon offers two; 35% and 70%. Choose 35%. If you choose 70% you must make your book available in their lending library. You want to sell your book, not allow it to be borrowed.

Next is price. Keep the price reasonable. Look at the ebooks on Amazon in the same genre and compare the asking price for similar books.

Finally, upload your docx file and wait while it is converted to the KDP format. You will see a tick when it's complete.

Upload your cover image and wait until it is accepted.

Save and Publish

Amazon will check the upload. They say this may take up to 72 hours, but can only take one day. To check this go to your bookshelf and you will see your book is LIVE.

Under the Price, click the down arrow to view on various sites. Choose US. This will take you to the page listing.

Copy the URL and save this in your Publishing Folder. This is the link to use to promote your book.
